Strava Integration

Auto-import rides from Strava, Garmin, and Wahoo devices.

About Strava Integration

If you prefer to record rides with Strava, Garmin, Wahoo, or Apple Watch, you can connect your Strava account to automatically sync those rides to Riding Places. GeoZone completions are detected from the GPS data, and points are awarded to your groups.

Connecting Strava

  1. In the Riding Places app, go to Settings
  2. Tap Connect with Strava
  3. Log in to Strava and authorise Riding Places

Once connected, future rides recorded in Strava are automatically imported. This typically happens within a few seconds of saving your Strava ride.

Only New Rides Sync

Past Strava rides are not imported. Only rides recorded after you connect will sync to Riding Places.

Read-Only Access

Riding Places only reads your Strava data. It never posts, modifies, or deletes anything on your Strava account.

How It Works

When you save a ride in Strava, it tells Riding Places to:

  1. Download your ride data from Strava
  2. Calculate distance points
  3. Detect any GeoZone completions from your GPS track
  4. Award points to your groups

Synced rides count toward your groups' Rambles too, just like rides recorded in the app - progress updates once the ride syncs.

Using Garmin, Wahoo, or Apple Watch

If you record with a Garmin, Wahoo, or Apple Watch, you can still sync to Riding Places:

  1. Connect your device to Strava (via Garmin Connect, Wahoo app, or Apple Health)
  2. Connect your Strava account to Riding Places

Your device syncs to Strava, which then syncs to Riding Places automatically. This chain works seamlessly in the background.

Marking Commutes for CO2 Tracking

Rides synced from Strava don't include commute details. To track CO2 savings from a Strava ride:

  1. Go to the Rides tab in the app
  2. Tap the synced ride
  3. Tap Edit
  4. Change the ride type to Commute
  5. Select which transport mode you replaced (car, bus, etc.)

Your CO2 savings will be calculated based on the ride distance and the transport mode you replaced.

Disconnecting Strava

To disconnect your Strava account, go to Settings, open the Integrations section, and tap the orange Strava button again, then confirm Disconnect. Previously synced rides remain in your history, but future Strava rides will not sync.

Troubleshooting

Rides not syncing

If your Strava rides aren't appearing in Riding Places:

  • Check that your Strava account is still connected in Settings
  • Verify the ride is marked as a "Ride" activity type in Strava (not Run, Walk, etc.)
  • Wait a few minutes - there can be occasional delays
  • Try disconnecting and reconnecting your Strava account

Missing GeoZone completions

If a GeoZone completion wasn't detected from a Strava ride:

  • Confirm you were a member of the GeoZone's group before the ride - only rides after you joined the group count, and some Rambles ask you to confirm before they count your rides
  • Check that your GPS track actually passed through the GeoZone area
  • GeoZone detection for Strava rides happens after sync, not during the ride

Duplicate rides

If you record in the Riding Places app and also have Strava connected, you may see duplicate rides. To avoid this, either:

  • Record in the Riding Places app only (recommended for best GeoZone detection)
  • Or record in Strava only and let it sync automatically
