Recording rides in the app, syncing from Strava, and viewing saved rides.
Location Permissions Required
Grant location access ("While Using" or "Always") for ride tracking to work.
Tap the settings icon on the Record screen map to customize your view:
The recording screen shows your moving time, distance, and current speed. The app continues recording when your screen is locked or you switch to another app.
If you pan or zoom the map, tap the Auto Center icon in the lower right corner to snap back to your current location.
Rides are saved locally first, then sync to the server when you have an internet connection. You can record rides offline - they'll sync when you're back online.
After tapping the red Stop Recording button, you can Resume if you're not done, or Save to finish. When saving, you can rename your ride and choose the Ride Type:
For commutes, you can specify which mode of transport you replaced (the available modes and their factors are listed below). Riding Places calculates your CO2 savings using published, standardized emission factors for your market, following the GHG Protocol for employee commuting. The exact factors and their sources are listed on the CO2 methodology page.
Automatic Commute Detection
If your group admin has set up a Commute GeoZone (like your office or workplace) in one of your Rambles and your ride passes through it, the app automatically classifies the ride as a Commute. Since an automatic classification can't know which vehicle you would have driven, the default replaced transport is a car of unknown size. CO2 savings are calculated for you.
If you actually replaced a Bus, Train, or something else, tap Editon the ride and change the replaced transport. Once you set it manually, future automatic detection won't override your choice.
Emission factors used (kg CO2 per km):

For the full sourcing and assumptions behind each factor, see our CO2 methodology page.
If you prefer to record with Strava, Garmin, Wahoo, or Apple Watch, you can connect your Strava account to automatically sync rides to Riding Places. GeoZone completions are detected from the GPS data.

The Rides tab contains a list of all your saved rides in Riding Places. Tap any ride to view its details, including the ride name, key statistics, a map of your route, and an elevation profile.
The Ride Detail page also shows the points the ride earned. Tap the Points dropdown to expand the breakdown: distance points, any commute bonus, and GeoZone points. If the ride passed through any GeoZones, a GeoZones dropdown appears next to it - tap it to see the list of completed GeoZones, and each one is drawn on the ride map so you can see exactly where it counted.
To edit a ride, tap on it to open the Ride Detail page, then tap the Edit button in the upper right. From there you can change the ride name, update the ride type (Sport or Commute), or delete the ride.
The Rides page includes an All Time Stats summary of your riding data. Swipe left to see a second screen showing your stats for the current week.
