Mobile App Guide

Recording and saving rides, navigation, route building, Rambles, and offline maps.

Getting Started

Download the Riding Places app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android). Create an account or log in, then grant location permissions when prompted.

After logging in, complete your profile with your full name, country, and experience level. You must complete your profile before you can record rides.

Main Navigation

The app has five main tabs:

  • Rides - View your ride history
  • Routes - Build and save routes
  • Record - Start tracking a ride
  • Groups - Find and join groups; open one to see its About, Rambles, and Rankings tabs
  • Rambles - Your Rambles hub: what each kind of Ramble does, your rewards, and every live Ramble across your groups

Access Settings via the gear icon in the upper right to manage your account and connect Strava.

Units (miles or kilometers)

Choose how distances, speeds, and elevation are shown throughout the app. Open Settings (gear icon), and in the Profile section tap Units (below Experience Level). The two options are Miles & feet and Kilometers & meters. Your choice applies everywhere - ride and route distances, speeds, elevation, the live recording screen, mile markers, and the navigation countdown (for example "Turn right in 650 ft"). This is the same setting as on the website, so changing it in either place updates both. New rider accounts default to miles and feet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the app free?

Yes. Riding Places is free for all riders. Groups pay a subscription fee based on numbers of group members.

Does the app work offline?

Yes. You can record rides without an internet connection - they sync when you're back online. For navigation, open the route while you're online (that alone saves its turn-by-turn data), or tap Download for offline to also save the map for your route area. See Offline Maps for the full guide.

Why isn't my ride showing GeoZone completions?

There's nothing to join at the GeoZone level - enrollment happens at the Ramble, and some Rambles ask you to confirm first. What matters is that you were a member of the group running the Ramble when you rode. If you joined the group after the ride, that ride won't count towards its Rambles.

Can I use the app with my Apple Watch?

The app runs on your phone, but we plan to add an Apple Watch app. For now, if you prefer to record with an Apple Watch via Strava, connect your Strava account in Settings to sync those rides automatically.

How do I get my rides from Garmin or Wahoo?

Connect your Strava account in Settings. If your Garmin or Wahoo syncs to Strava, those rides will automatically appear in Riding Places. Note that Strava only sends rides recorded after you connect your account - earlier rides won't be imported.

Why is my GPS accuracy poor?

GPS works best outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Buildings, trees, and weather can affect accuracy. Make sure Location Services is enabled for Riding Places in your phone's Settings.

How do I save battery during long rides?

If you need to refer to the map or metrics on your phone often while you ride, you can enable NavScreen Mode in Map Settings - it dims the screen to 10% brightness after 30 seconds of inactivity. For the most battery savings, press your phone's power button to lock the screen altogether; the app continues recording in the background.

I finished a Ramble - where's my prize?

If the Ramble offers a reward, you'll receive a congratulations email with instructions. Check your inbox (and spam folder). For shipped prizes, click the claim link in the email to enter your address. For coupons, the code is in the email. Lost the email? Open the Rambles tab in the app: the Your rewards section shows your awards, with coupon and collection details right there and a Claim reward button for shipped prizes. (Older wins from before that section launched: ask your group admin for help.) See the Rewards & Prizes guide for full details.

How do I delete my account?

Go to Settings, scroll down to the Help section, and tap Delete Account. You'll be asked to confirm - this action is permanent and cannot be undone. All your rides, routes, points, group memberships, and profile data will be permanently removed. If you connected Strava, deleting your account also removes Riding Places' access to your Strava account at Strava.
