Groups & Rambles

Joining groups and taking part in their Rambles.

About Groups and Rambles

Rambles are how groups ride together - visit favorite places, chase goals, climb leaderboards, or raise money for good causes. Groups create them, whether that's your employer, a local bike shop, or a cycling club, and your everyday riding is what counts.

Join the group, then confirm any Ramble that asks before it counts your rides. If a Ramble involves visiting places, those locations are GeoZones: circles on the map that live inside the Ramble.

Many Rambles offer rewards - from discount codes to physical prizes. See Rewards & Prizes below for how claiming works.

Joining a Group

  1. Tap the Groups tab, then the Discover sub-tab
  2. Type the group's name into the search box ("Search groups...") - matching groups appear as you type
  3. Tap the group, then tap Join Group - if it's a private group, you'll be asked for the access code provided by the group admin

Joining the group puts its Rambles in your hub, and some Rambles ask you to confirm before they count your rides - several kinds don't even involve locations, so your everyday rides may already be counting. The Groups tab opens on My Groups, where every group you've joined lives.

Not sure about a group yet? Open a public group before joining and browse its Rambles tab - you'll see everything it's running, just without your own progress until you join.

Private Groups

Some groups are private - you'll need an access code to join, see their Rambles, and have your riding count. Don't have the code? Contact the Group Admin.

Your Group's Rambles

Open a group from the Groups tab and you'll see three tabs: About, Rambles, and Rankings. The Rambles tab lists every Ramble the group is running, one card each, showing the kind, the Ramble's name, what counts, when it runs, and a chip with your progress so far - things like "Done", "3/8 visits", or "#4".

Tap a card to open the Ramble itself:

  • Your progress - matched to the kind: a completion check, a progress bar toward a visit target, the group's combined total, or your place on the board
  • Period - on repeating Rambles, flick between periods to look back at past weeks, months, or years
  • Where it counts - for location Rambles, a map and list of the GeoZones that count
  • The reward - what's on offer, with a hint on how you'll claim it

The Six Kinds of Ramble

  • Visit one location on a ride - Ride to a special spot and it counts. One visit is all it takes.
  • Visit one location over time - Keep coming back: hit the same spot enough times in a period to win.
  • Visit multiple locations on a ride - String several locations into one ride and hit them all to complete it.
  • Visit locations as a group - Every rider's visits add up to one group total, and everyone shares the win.
  • Pedal for Good - Every qualifying ride adds to a charity pot your group raises together.
  • Leaderboard - Top the board by distance, CO2 saved, points, or rides each period.

The Rambles Tab

The Rambles tab at the bottom of the app is your hub across all your groups:

  • An intro card at the top cycles through what each kind of Ramble does - swipe it anytime for a refresher
  • Your rewards - awards from your Rambles: coupon codes and collection notes are shown right there, and shipped prizes have a Claim reward or View claim button (see Rewards & Prizes)
  • Every live Ramble across your groups, grouped by group, each with your progress chip - tap one to open it

Riding Through GeoZones

The GeoZones from your groups' Rambles appear on the map in the Record tab, so you can see where the riding counts. Simply record a ride (in the app or via Strava) that passes through a GeoZone - the app automatically detects when you enter the GeoZone's radius and awards points.

You can ride through the same GeoZone on multiple rides, and each ride awards 1 point. However, only one visit per GeoZone counts per ride - so if your ride passes through three different GeoZones, all three count, but passing through the same GeoZone three times on one ride only counts once.

Strava Rides: GeoZone Detection After Sync

When you record in the Riding Places app, GeoZone completions appear in real-time during your ride. For Strava rides, detection happens after the ride syncs - not during.

Rewards & Prizes

Rewards belong to the Ramble, and Riding Places notices when you've earned one. You'll receive a congratulations email automatically: the moment you complete a location visit, when you hit your visit target for the period, when your group's combined goal is reached, or when you finish 1st, 2nd, or 3rd on a Leaderboard at the end of a period.

The email includes the reward details and instructions for claiming. How you claim depends on the delivery method the group chose:

  • Coupon or discount code - The code is displayed directly in the email. Copy it and use it with the group's business.
  • Shipped prize - The email contains a Claim Your Prize link. Click it to fill in your name and shipping address, and the group will post the prize to you.
  • Collect in person - The email includes pickup instructions from the group (e.g., visit their shop or location).
  • Your choice - The email link takes you to a page where you choose between Ship to My Address or Collect in Person, then follow the appropriate steps.

Lost the email? Your awards also appear in the Your rewards section at the top of the Rambles tab - tap Claim reward to start a claim, or View claim to check on one you've already made. (Wins from before Your rewards launched live only in their email - ask your group admin if one goes missing.)

Check Your Email

Reward instructions are sent automatically when you earn one. Check your inbox (and spam/junk folder) for an email from Riding Places with the Ramble name in the subject line. If it never turns up, check the Your rewards section in the app, or ask your group admin.
